I had no idea of what it would feel like to be back on Maui. My entire existence had been stripped down completely and I was left raw and exposed.

I hadn’t been able to paint since the fire but my daughter had gotten me a small studio space so I set myself up and found myself staring at a blank canvas. I decided that since I was there, I might as well push some paint around.

Slowly this piece emerged. Element by element it revealed itself. Early in the process I recognized Maui, the trickster. But he’s more than that, he’s the keeper of time. Once he placed the sun in the sky the days became regular and time stabilized. Of course he was mourning the loss of Lahaina but new growth is already visible and we are at the precipice of what we create, hopefully with intention and respect for the land that gives us life.
